【JLPT N4 Grammar】「〜な」「〜なよ」|How to Say "Don’t" in Japanese

今日は、日本語の禁止表現「〜な」について紹介します。
Today, let's learn how to use 「〜な」, a Japanese grammar pattern used to tell someone not to do something.
① 意味(Meaning)
「〜な」は、相手に「〜してはいけない」と強く伝えるときに使います。
「〜な」 is used to strongly tell someone not to do something.
英語の "Don't ~!" に近い表現です。
It is similar to "Don't ~!" in English.
★ただし、強く直接的な言い方なので、使う場面には注意が必要です。
However, it sounds strong and direct, so be careful when using it.
② 作り方(Formation)
動詞の辞書形 + な
Verb (dictionary form) + な
入(はい)る to enter
触(さわ)る to touch
見(み)る to look, to watch , to see
言(い)う to say
例(Examples):
ここに入(はい)るな!Don't come in here!
勝手に触(さわ)るな!Don't touch that without permission!
こっちを見(み)るな!Don't look at me!
そんなこと言(い)うな!Don't say things like that!
「〜な」は、怒っているときや、強く注意するときによく使われます。
This form is often used when someone is angry or giving a strong warning.
③ 丁寧な言い方(Polite Expression)
丁寧に禁止を伝えたいときは、「〜ないでください」を使います。
When you want to politely ask someone not to do something, use 「〜ないでください」 instead.
例(Examples):
ここに入るな!Don't come in here!
→ ここに入らないでください。Please don't come in here.
勝手に触るな!Don't touch that without permission!
→ 勝手に触らないでください。Please don't touch that without permission.
「〜ないでください」は、「〜な」よりも丁寧で、日常生活でも使いやすい表現です。
「〜ないでください」 is more polite and is generally more appropriate in everyday situations.
④ 「〜なよ」の使い方(Using「〜なよ」)
親しい人との会話では、「〜なよ」という表現もよく使われます。
In casual conversations with friends or people you are close to, 「〜なよ」 is also commonly used.
例(Examples):
そんなに無理するなよ。Don't push yourself too hard.
あんまり気にするなよ。Don't worry too much about it.
そんなに落ち込むなよ。Don't feel so down.
一人で抱え込むなよ。Don't try to handle everything on your own.
このような場合、「〜なよ」は強い禁止ではなく、相手を心配したり、励ましたりする気持ちを表します。
In these situations, 「〜なよ」 is not necessarily a strong command. It can express care, concern, or encouragement.
ただし、言い方によっては怒りを表すこともあります。
However, depending on the tone, it can also express anger.
例:
ふざけるなよ!Don't mess with me! / Cut it out!
⑤ 「〜なよ」と「〜ないでね」の違い(Gender and Tone Differences)
「〜なよ」は、特に男性が使うことが多い表現です。
「〜なよ」 is more commonly used by men, especially in casual conversations.
一方、女性は「〜ないでね」という表現を使うことが多く、より優しく、柔らかい印象になります。
Women often prefer 「〜ないでね」, which generally sounds softer and gentler.
例(Examples):
そんなに無理するなよ。Don't push yourself too hard.
→ そんなに無理しないでね。Don't push yourself too hard, okay?
あんまり気にするなよ。Don't worry too much about it.
→ あんまり気にしないでね。Try not to worry too much, okay?
そんなに落ち込むなよ。Don't feel so down.
→ そんなに落ち込まないでね。Don't be too hard on yourself, okay?
どちらも相手を思いやる表現ですが、「〜なよ」は少し男性的で力強く、「〜ないでね」は柔らかく優しい印象になります。
Both expressions can show care and concern, but 「〜なよ」 tends to sound more masculine and direct, while 「〜ないでね」 sounds softer and warmer.
もちろん、「〜ないでね」は女性だけの表現ではありません。男性もよく使います。
Of course, 「〜ないでね」 is not only used by women. Men use it too.
また、女性が「〜なよ」を使うこともあります。性別によって厳密に決まっているわけではなく、話し方や人間関係によって変わります。
Women can also use 「〜なよ」. These are general tendencies, not strict gender rules. The choice depends on the speaker's style and relationship with the listener.
